Have you tried our hummus recipe?
Yes? Then you’ll 100% love the Baba Ganoush.
Baba Ganoush looks very similar to hummus.
What’s the difference?
They differ in their main ingredients and flavours. Hummus features mashed chickpeas, yielding a smooth texture with a nutty, tangy taste from tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. In contrast, baba ganoush showcases roasted aubergine, offering a creamier, smokier texture with a mild, earthy flavour complemented by tahini, lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil.
Despite these distinctions, both dips provide nutritious options rich in fibre, protein, and healthy fats, enjoyed across cultures with bread or vegetables.
Spoiler alert: Baba Ganoush costs under £2 per serving (Yes, we did the maths!)

How to prepare?
Part 1: Roasting the aubergine
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Cut the aubergine into slices
- Place the aubergine pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminium foil. Make sure they are spread out evenly and not overcrowded.
- Drizzle olive oil over the aubergine pieces, making sure each piece is lightly coated. Top tip: use a pastry brush to evenly distribute the oil.
- Sprinkle salt and pepper over the aubergine pieces
- Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and roast the aubergine for about 20-25 minutes, or until the pieces are tender and golden brown. Exact cooking time may vary depending on the size of your aubergine pieces and your oven.
Part 2 (Can enjoy this activity with kids over 5)
- Using a fork, mash the aubergine until smooth.
- Add the minced garlic, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, paprika and salt to the mashed aubergine. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed, adding more salt or lemon juice according to your preference.
- Drizzle with a little extra olive oil and sprinkle chopped parsley over the top. If desired, garnish with a sprinkle of paprika/cumin for colour and flavour.
Note: You can adjust the quantities of garlic, lemon juice, and tahini according to your taste preferences. Some variations also include adding a pinch of cumin or smoked paprika for extra flavour.
Serve the Baba Ganoush with pita bread, crackers, or fresh vegetables for dipping. Enjoy!
